Messages from Friends and Relatives

Home

My father-in-law was a very kind, funny and humble man. I was welcomed into the Chona family and became like one of his own daughters.

In those days when I married his first-born son Thomas, marriages between Tonga and Bemba people were not that common. My father-in-law allowed his son to go ahead and marry me as long as that is what he wanted and that he would fully support him.

Once he came to visit us from abroad, and when it was almost 17:00 hours I noticed that my father-in-law was waiting to pick me up from my work place even though my husband worked right next door to mine.  This just went on to show how much he cared, loved and treated me like one of his daughters. He referred to me as Oondela (the one who looks after me) whenever he spoke to me. I never met a selfless and generous man like my father-in-law Mainza Chona.

This is why even now when it hits me that he is no longer with us I cry for him as I would for my father. Even though he may be gone, I still see him in my four boys and I thank God Almighty for having chosen me to be a part of his family.

May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
