Mainza Chona wrote a book in Tonga called "Kabuca Uleta Tunji", the literal translation to in English is "The morning brings many things". The book was written between 1951 and 1952, it was published by the University of London Press LTD in association with the Publications Bureau. It is a story of two friends who fall in love with one girl. It is starts off in Nampeyo village in the rein of Chief Chona Hameja Chilala. It reflects how village life was the in Northern Rhodesia in the early to mid twentieth century. While the book is based on a factious love story some events really did occur in those days. It also reflects the thinking of the people in Colonial Africa and their fascination for city life. The book is full of humor which was typical of Mainza Chona. Mutinta (the main character) and Maliko are best friends and meet from time to time to look after cattle in the forest. Maliko is feared by his peers because he is rough and has a reputation of beating up boys older than him. Maliko loves Jessy a girl who is a close neighbor of Mutinta and sends his friend messages of love to her. She refuses all of Maliko’s persistent proposals sent through Mutinta and instead falls in love with Mutinta. In fear of the wrath of Maliko, Mutinta makes a plan to deceive Maliko by telling him Jessy agreed to be his girlfriend. Jessy has to pretend to like Maliko so that Mutinta does not get beat up. Hiding the truth becomes complicated as time goes on. Mutinta and Maliko both go to work in the city (Lusaka) and while there the truth becomes known. Maliko is bitter. A lot of drama happens as these two characters go back and forth to the village to see Jessy. An English version of the book will be available soon |
